NBA 籃球英語第一集

1. Jordan made his much-anticipated return before a sellout crowd at Madison Square Garden.

Jordan在萬眾期盼下重返美國職籃聯盟，首場在(紐約的)麥迪生?V場花園(球場)的比�座無虛席。

sellout：門票售罄。

a sellout crowd：?M座，客?M，座無虛席。

SRO：比�、音樂會，電影的門票售罄時，常掛出「SRO」的牌子，SRO就是Standing Room Only的頭字語(每個單字首個字母的組合字)，意為「（座票售罄）只剩站票」。

2. He was cheered during player introductions, jeered when he tossed up an airball less than three minutes into the game and scrutinized on every move the rest of the night.

在介紹球員出場時他(Jordan)受到觀眾的歡呼；比�進行到三分鐘時，他投出一個「籃外空心球」也引起觀眾的訕笑；接下?淼恼�肀荣?，觀眾的焦點都集中在他身上。

run：【名詞】連續(的得分)；「小高潮」。其他用法：a long run (of a movie)（某電影）連續放映；a run of wet weather連綿不斷的雨天；a good run at play比�連勝。

swung the momentum：逆轉了全隊氣勢。swung是 swing 的過去式及過去分詞，是「使改變方向、使迴轉」的意思。Momentum在物理、力學上是「動量」的意思，引伸的意思為「氣勢」。

doormats：洋人一般在進入室內時是不脫鞋的；為了怕把室內弄得太髒，主人會在門前擺一塊「擦鞋墊」doormat以便清除鞋底泥垢，引申的意思就是「被踩在腳底」的一支隊伍。

原文中在 everybody 之後沒有加上 else一字，是錯誤的。"everybody" in the league 包括自己本身這一隊，可是自己不能把自己踩在腳底下，所以應該剔除表示本身這一隊。改成 "everybody else" 就不包括自己本身這一隊了。

beat the shot clock：在出手時限結束之前(完成出手投籃的動作) 。NBA規定進攻一方必須在內24秒出手投籃，但在球過中線以後在前場的發球後，必須在 14 內秒出手投籃，否則違例。shot clock即是這種限時的計時器。在工作時限 (deadline，例如：交報告、交學費、申請入學、報名考試等的截止日期)前完成工作，可以說 beat the deadline。

rehabilitating：養傷，原形是 rehabilitate，名詞形為 rehabilitation。其他的用字還有 recuperate。「護士」一字 nurse當做動詞用也是「養傷」的意思。
close to：接近於…。此處的「接近」是指接近某種程度或狀況。由於此處的to是介系詞，因此後面接著用動詞時，應用動名詞【動詞+ing】；千萬不要把這個 to 當做不定詞的 to 而接動詞原形。

ran out of gas：gas代表一種能量，在球場上指的是體力。因此，ran out of gas 就是「耗盡體力」。請注意，此處動詞用 run，是「用」的意思；run out of money就是「沒錢用了、錢花光了」。

2. Minnesota dished out 39 assists and turned the ball over just nine times.

2. Jazz Sing Different Tune.
(猶他)爵士隊的態度有所改變。

本句應該是 "The Jazz sing a different tune." 原文是新聞的一項標題，而在新聞標題中常會省略冠詞a 或 the。

sing a different tune：也可以說成 sing another tune、change one's tune 或是 change one's note。Tune是曲調，note是音符。sing a different tune字面上的意思是「改變了曲調、腔調、音符」，不過，現在多用?碇浮父淖兞苏f話的態度或處理事情的原則、方針」。例如："He used to criticize the Democrats constantly, but lately he has sung a different tune."

1. Williams tried to hide his frustrations by hollering at the basket support, but official Mark Wunderlich walked the baseline in time to hear Williams colorful description of the no-call.

colorful description：colorful是「多采多姿的」、「生動的」之意。這種「多采多姿的」的話多半都不是好話，因此帶有一點諷刺的意味。

no-call：應該吹犯規或違例而未吹。但是，如果說 good no-call，是因為本?砭蜎]有犯規或違例而未吹，不吹犯規或違例是正確的。

2. Jones suffered a gash on the top of his head in a third-quarter collision, took seven stitches, and returned with 5:49 left to play.

"None were as costly, though, as the two Lamar Odom missed right before Davis' game winning shot." 裡的 though 不是連接詞而是副詞。它插在句中，有著「轉變語氣」的作用。一般在解讀句子時，可以先暫時忽略插入的字句，這樣會比較容易理解句子。本句成為 "None were as costly as the two Lamar Odom missed right before Davis' game winning shot."，是個 as… as 的句型；Lamar Odom missed…是修飾 the two 的關係子句，前面的 which (that) 因為是關係子句動詞 missed 的受詞，因而被省略了。本句可以看成 "None were as costly as the two (which) Lamar Odom missed." 句中 though 的副詞用法，也可以將它放在句尾，如："None were as costly as the two Lamar Odom missed right before Davis' game winning shot, though." 句中 " right" before…是「恰好」在…之前。

另外，?K非所有以 -ly 結尾的單字都是形容詞； costly 就是個形容詞。通常名詞後面加上-ly結尾的單字是形容詞，如：friend 是名詞，加上字尾 -ly 後，friendly 成為形容詞；形容詞後面加上 -ly 結尾的單字才是副詞，如：different 是形容詞，後面加上-ly 結尾後，differently 成為副詞。只有少數的名詞以-ly結尾，如：anomaly「反常」。
