clawed:claw當做【名詞】,是指鳥、動物的爪子。當【動詞】時,是「以爪撕裂」、「以爪抓緊」、「以爪挖掘」,進而比喻「像是以爪挖出一條路般地努力地前進」。簡單地說,就是「很努力做一件事」。

right at the very end:right,very 都有「恰好就在…的時候」之意。
had trouble making the big play:和 have difficulty一樣,have trouble 後面接另一個動詞時,要用【動名詞】的形式,如本句的 making。big play意指「很重要或很關鍵性的表現」。
